How to build an aviary in Planet Zoo 2

Pre-release guide · updated September 26, 2026

Based on Frontier's official aviary feature. Species-specific flying-space values and tested builds will be added after the October 13 release. The troubleshooting table suggests what to check; it is not a list of tested fixes.

Create a closed habitat, add a roof and check flying space and nesting needs for your chosen birds.

Step by step

  1. Build an enclosed barrier loop and add a staff gate.
  2. Select the habitat and choose Add Roof. The game builds a roof over the barrier posts.
  3. Shape the roof with internal pillars. You can adjust their height and rotation, and change the roof material and curvature.
  4. Check Flyable Area in the habitat info panel and compare it with each bird's requirement in the Zoopedia and welfare information.
  5. Add nesting sites that suit the birds you plan to breed.

Check Flyable Area, not just floor area

Birds need flying space, so the habitat's footprint alone won't tell you whether they have enough room. The info panel shows Flyable Area. If it's too low, raise the roof or enlarge the habitat, then check it again.

Nest types

Frontier describes four nest types: tree cavities, cups, water platforms and mud nests. Different species need different nests, so check which one each bird needs before you build.

Mixed aviaries and walkthroughs

Some birds can share a habitat with other birds or terrestrial animals. Some also allow guest walkthroughs, using a guest gate and a path. Both depend on the species, so check each animal's information in the game first.
