The four climate zones

• Temperate valleys — the classic Transport Fever landscape.
• Subarctic swamps — new in Transport Fever 3, with region-specific vehicles such as Norwegian rail stock.
• Desert plains.
• Tropical islands.

A launch review reports cargo specific to the new arctic zone. Check the industry list in your save before you plan a chain.

Random maps and map settings

Maps are randomly generated with biomes that blend into each other. Urban Games says map scale is abstract rather than realistic. A launch review lists these settings: map size, industry density, city density and a start decade from 1900 to 2030. Terraforming is possible but affects public approval.

Tycoon, sandbox and campaign

• Tycoon: the main economic game, with adjustable difficulty.
• Sandbox: unlimited building with mod support.
• Campaign: missions inspired by historic events. One review counts eight missions, the first acting as a tutorial, each rated one to three stars.

Hand-crafted maps

The Deluxe Edition includes three hand-crafted maps. The pages we checked do not name them. Players can also build maps with the level editor listed on Steam, and share them through the cross-platform mod browser.

Which map should you start on?

For a first game, a temperate map with medium city and industry density keeps distances short and choices easy to read.
